Reservation & examination policy in Gujarat
The Patidar agitation from 2015 led to the state's 10% Economically Weaker Sections quota in 2016, which preceded and informed the 103rd Constitutional Amendment upheld by the Supreme Court in 2022. Gujarat therefore has the longest working experience of income-based reservation in India.

Why the reform argument matters in Gujarat
- 01Gujarat's EWS experience is the closest existing precedent for the income-verified model the movement proposes.
- 02The Patidar agitation showed that category expansion produces new claimants rather than resolving distributional conflict.
- 03Strong private employment means Gujarat's mobility story depends less on quotas than most states, a useful comparison point.
